Yoga for Fred 2013

Join us at our second Yoga for Fred Event, a Vinyasa yoga class for all levels of yoga practitioners taught by Jessi Sepulvida to benefit Fred K's Cancer. Immediately, following the class, light refreshments will be served! Click here to view the photos from our first Yoga for Fred Event!

2013 Fred K's Cancer Event Details

*Welcome to the 4th Annual

Fred K's Cancer Event!*

Fred K’s Cancer is a rain or shine event (unlike in baseball, there will be no rain delays!) that will take place on Saturday, June 29, 2013. The event will last from 8-11:00 am and take place at Cantiague Park in Hicksville, NY. The trail to be walked (for those who want to run, they are more than welcome to) is less than 2 miles in length.

Itinerary:
8-9:00 am – Event Registration (where you will hand in your donations and receive your event t-shirts if you've pre-registered)
9-9:30 am – Event Kick-off
9:30-11:00 am – Walk

Fred K's Cancer June 23, 2012

The 3rd Annual Fred K's Cancer took place at Eisenhower Park, a first for us. A major difference between our registration area at Eisenhower from Cantiague is that there is no protection from the sun, therefore we brought a pop-up tent for registration, which took most of the morning to get set up.

Another huge difference is that the fitness trail at Eisenhower is 3.1 miles, nearly 2 miles longer than the trail our walkers were used to at Cantiague Park. Despite this, our walkers arrived and waited cheerfully for the event to kickoff.

That is, everyone but Baby J. : )

We headed into the day at $2,400. We had just over a month to reach our goal of $4,000.

Constantine Giannakakis, who walks in honor of his father, Angelo, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2004, would be leading the charge.

After a brief pep talk and thank you, the walk was underway.

 

 

Our walkers completed the trek upbeat, if a little bit overheated and tired.

As usual, Fred #2 finished things off like Rocky Balboa. He even did so while carrying Mama Leone's handbag.

After selling more raffle tickets and merchandise, it was time to tabulate our Walk Day total. $607, bring our total up to $3,000!

Before everyone dispersed for the day, we made sure to talk one final picture of all of our supporters.

Post Event Details: We accepted donations for the 2012 event through July 31^st. Immediately following the walk, we continued to receive donations and held an Arbonne Spa Party that raised a total of $100.  On July 31^st, we ended up with a total of $3,600 raised that was split between the Oral Cancer Foundation and the Sean Kimerling Testicular Foundation

Breathe N Flow Yoga to Host its Second Fred K’s Cancer Yoga Class!

Come out to Breathe N Flow Yoga Studio on Friday, June 1^st and enjoy a challenging, yet rewarding session of yoga while supporting Fred K’s Cancer!

Fridays at 4:00 pm at Breathe N Flow Yoga Studio are all about supporting the community. The studio holds donation-based classes in which 100% of the donations are given to their favorite non-profit charity and for the second year in a row, they’ve kindly agreed to donate one of these community classes to Fred K’s Cancer! Improve your Cancer Treatments with Fitness

A cancer diagnosis, though it may feel like it, is not the beginning of the end; it is the beginning. When your doctor breaks the unbearable news to you that you are suffering from a rare form of cancer, such as mesothelioma, it is easy for you to feel defeated – in addition to an array of other emotional extremes. Mesothelioma doctors will go over your treatment options and what to expect during the process of treating your cancer. While the information your doctor provides you with is all new and confusing, you may be surprised to hear that your doctor will recommend that you start or continue a regular fitness program.

The American Cancer Society has issued statements regarding the benefits of physical activity and fitness for cancer patients and survivors. Regular exercise increases quality of life, which increases the chances of surviving and overcoming a diagnosis of cancer. Of course, your fitness routine may change drastically once your cancer treatment begins; however, it is important you still maintain a level of physical activity as recommended by your mesothelioma doctors. During the course of your treatment and your recovery, your body may not be able to handle activities you once were able to do effortlessly. However, it is still beneficial to your health to incorporate some type of physical activity into your life several times a week, if not daily.

Don’t become defeated if you cannot exercise one day. If you haven’t the energy to take a long walk one day, take a short one around the couch, or just get out of bed to get your own glass of water instead of allowing someone else to get it for you. That small bit of physical activity, though it may not seem like it, is extremely beneficial to your health.

Fitness and exercise during and after cancer is so paramount to your quality of life that many hospitals and fitness facilities across the country are now offering yoga and other fitness classes for those living with or overcoming cancer. Ask your doctor about your fitness routine to find out what is okay for you to participate in and what you can incorporate into your life to help improve the quality of it. Fitness promotes better health, which helps your body handle the extreme treatments used to fight cancer, which will give you a better chance at overcoming this obstacle.

Fred K's Cancer Bowl-a-Thon

Come on down to the 1st Annual Fred K's Cancer Bowl-a-Thon on Thursday, January 26th at the AMF Sheridan Lanes in Mineola, NY!

When: Thursday, January 26, 2011 6:30-8:30 pm
Where: AMF Sheridan Lanes
           199 E. Jericho Turnpike
           Mineola, NY 11501
Cost: $30/Bowler (price includes lane time and bowling shoes for all participants)
         $10/Non-bowlers

Lanes accommodate 5 bowlers. Teams can consist of up to 5 players. Teams with less than 5 players or individuals competing alone should be prepared to share a lane. To register, email us. Include your team name, team captain name, contact information, and team participants.

There will be an opportunity to participate in a 50/50 raffle prize. All proceeds of the event will benefit Fred K's Cancer!

Fred K’s Cancer June 26, 2011

Unlike last year when the air was heavy with humidity, we arrived at Cantiague Park nice and early for set up and were greeted with a beautiful sunny and clear day. Lisa and Fred #2 set up registration…

…while Serena arranged the goodie bags. This year’s goodie bags were extremely special. The New York Mets bags were donated by the Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation. The first 15 walkers who registered and paid their registration fee received a New York Mets gym bag. The remainder of the walkers received a New York Mets beach tote. Each bag contained the walker’s walk t-shirt, a bottle of water,  a coupon envelope filled our sponsor’s business cards as well as the business cards of key supporters (Nicole Giannakakis—Avon representative and Fred K’s Cancer Executive Director, Sylvia Nasser—The Fit Fem, Pat Darienzo—Magician Extraordinaire, and Kimberly Konzack-Fazio—Arbonne Representative), a bottle of Avon Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard with SPF 30 donated by Nicole Giannakakis, a Biotene pack that included an oral rinse and toothpaste donated by the Oral Cancer Foundation, Oral Cancer Foundation maroon silicone bracelets donated by the Oral Cancer Foundation, a Traveling Baseball Babes bumper sticker, and assorted printed materials.

At registration, we arranged for Fred K’s Cancer’s Treasurer and Secretary, Mary Gerolimatos (aka: Mamadukes) and Roberta Hirsch, to man the fort during the walk to assist late registrants and sell handmade New York Yankees and New York Mets-colored beaded bracelets, tootsie pops, raffle tickets, and Fred K’s Cancer silicone bracelets.

The turnout was even better than last year! Over 30 walkers plus lots of kiddies came out to walk in support of the Freds!

Everyone immediately put on their snazzy walk t-shirts. Shirts were created by CustomInk.com (thank you, Stephanie Kerr!) and generously sponsored by Ambelos Construction, The Main Event Restaurant & Sports Bar, Omega Speaker Systems, Sergio Britto Contracting, and Theodoros Papageorgiou, CPA.

Doncer, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer in February of this year.

After running the entire trail, Kristy Morgan and Tara Salvati joined the Leones and Morgans in walking for Kristy’s father, Fred #2.  

Maryann Catalano, Lauren Fischer, and Jack Fischer (Shane Fischer pictured in stroller) all also walk in support of Fred #2.

Nicole and her charming son, Constantine walk for Constantine’s father, Angelo Giannakakis, who had been diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2004.

And of course, the reason why we work so hard to make this walk a successful event, The Freds:

Heading into the walk, we had raised a total of $2,000 with a goal of $3,000. After the walk, it was time to total up the dollars we raised on the day between raffle sales, merchandise sales, and donations. We surpassed our goal by $400!! Sophia and Constantine helped us to color in the thermometer.

Post Event Details: We accepted donations for the 2011 event through July 31^st. Immediately following the walk, we continued to receive donations and held a garage sale in which every single dollar made was donated to Fred K’s Cancer. The garage sale alone made $550! We also received the check from Nicole’s 2^nd Annual Avon Online Fundraising Event. The event exceeded last year’s amount by $100, raising $140! On July 31^st, we ended up with a total of $4,000 raised that was split between the Oral Cancer Foundation and the Sean Kimerling Testicular Foundation.
